π· Meet me for wine, art, exploration & conversation.
Art looks different when you encounter it where it's actually made.
For this edition of our In the Field Artist Series, we're leaving Los Alamos behind and heading to Santa Barbara for an intimate visit with artist Paulo Lima inside his working studio.
Paulo is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves among sculpture, painting, photography and ceramics. Originally from Brazil, he holds a PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from UCLA and an MFA in Costume Design from Cal State Long Beach, and teaches at Loyola Marymount University and Cal Poly Pomona. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in California and New Mexico. Blueprint Bricks Website
But this isn't a lecture.
It's an invitation into the artist's world.
ποΈ What we'll explore
With a glass of wine in hand, we'll spend time with Paulo, see his work where it comes to life, and talk about the ideas and experiences that inform his creative practice.
π Art + Identity β How Paulo's Brazilian heritage, lived experience and evolving identities find their way into his work.
𧬠Art + Ancestry β Paulo describes his art as a way of connecting with his ancestors and paying homage to the cultures that have shaped him. Blueprint Bricks Website
π Art + Performance β With an academic background in theater, performance studies and costume design, Paulo brings an unusually interdisciplinary perspective to visual art. ExpertFile
πͺ¨ Materials + Transformation β Painting. Ceramics. Sculpture. Photography. Found and recycled materials. Paulo works across mediums rather than allowing a single one to define his practice. Blueprint Bricks Website
β»οΈ Beauty + Second Lives β Recycled materials appear throughout his work, giving discarded objects new lives and allowing him to explore what he calls the circularity of beauty. Blueprint Bricks Website
π Race, Gender, Sexuality + Immigration β We'll explore how art can become a place for conversations about identity, belonging and the forces that shape how we see ourselves and one another. Blueprint Bricks Website
π¨βπ¨ The Artist at Work β What changes when we experience artwork not on a pristine gallery wall, but surrounded by the materials, unfinished ideas and creative experiments of the person making it?
β¨ This is what In the Field is all about.
Not simply looking at art.
Meeting the people who make it.
Going into the places where ideas become objects.
Asking questions.
Looking more closely.
And discovering what we might have missed if we'd simply walked past the finished piece hanging on a wall.
Paulo has described his Santa Barbara studio as a βsacred placeβ where the materials around him often inspire what he creates next. Santa Maria Sun
On November 1, we get to step inside it.
Come curious.
We'll bring the wine. π·π¨
