🧭 Speaker Series: Korčula — From Marco Polo to Modern Exploration Featuring: Dr. Bryon Bass, PhD Archaeology

  • Clemetine Carter Wines 388 Bell Street Los Alamos, CA, 93440 United States (map)

Join us for an unforgettable evening with true modern-day explorer Dr. Bryon Bass — archaeologist, global traveler, safety specialist, search-and-rescue team member, law enforcement dive unit member, and contributing editor to Overland Journal.

Bryon earned his PhD in Archaeology and began his career collaborating with the Department of Pre- and Protohistory at the University of Zürich. After years in the fast-paced corporate archaeology world, he founded his own cultural resources consulting company — a move that expanded his work across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the South Pacific, and the Americas. His expertise now spans archaeology, remote workforce safety training, technical diving, and field operations in some of the world’s most isolated regions.

But this evening centers on a place particularly close to his heart:

The Croatian island of Korčula.

Bryon completed his doctoral research on Korčula in the years immediately following the fall of Yugoslavia — a pivotal and complex time in the region’s modern history. He owns property in the heart of Korčula’s Old Town and continues to spend extended time there. (As Sonja says: “I got there as fast as I could.” It is, indeed, a magical place.)

During this insightful — and always entertaining — conversation, Bryon will explore:

  • 🏛️ The layered history of Korčula from antiquity to today

  • 🌊 Life on a strategic Adriatic island shaped by trade, conquest, and culture

  • 🧭 The enduring legend of Marco Polo and his ties to Korčula

  • 🏺 Archaeological discoveries and what they reveal about Mediterranean life

  • 🌍 What it means to study history in a region emerging from political upheaval

  • 😂 Field stories from global expeditions (with Bryon’s signature humor)

  • ❓ Open Q&A — from ancient trade routes to modern Croatian culture

This promises to be an evening of storytelling, scholarship, laughter, and armchair adventure — blending Old World history with modern exploration.

Please RSVP if you can — though as always, it is not required. You are warmly welcome to join us.

On the theme of Eastern Europe, don’t forget to order some of our house-made food from Babi’s Kafana!
